Red Dog

This work is part of the "Pets and Owners" series, which is based on the portrait-like resemblance between animals and their humans. This piece was originally conceived as a sweet picture of a rural landscape featuring a cute dog and its owner, cuddling in the sun. But, as is usually the case with me, as I worked, I saw how beautifully the red imprimatura had become a dog, and I decided to leave it as is. I also loved the red clouds that blended into the red beret. I resisted painting them for a long time, too. But they overpowered the composition. The red color created drama, which I didnt want. So I had to make the clouds white.

This oil painting on canvas measures 60x80 cm. It is stretched on a 4 cm gallery-thick stretcher bar. The edge is painted and requires no framing. It has all the necessary fastenings, so its ready to hang on the wall.
