Lyadsky Garden

An overgrown wasteland adjoined Letskys one-story house. But in May 1789, an event occurred that greatly influenced the development of Kazan. Emperor Paul I visited the city to inspect the troops. He settled in Letskys house and lived there for a whole week. Paul I was very pleased with the reception. In gratitude, he allocated more than 200 thousand rubles for the development of the city, gave permission to build cathedrals and a theater. And he ordered the streets at the intersection of which the house stood to be called Bolshaya and Malaya Letskaya. After the emperors departure, the major general himself took up the improvement of the territory. With his own hands, he planted many new trees - pines, apple trees, made benches. The garden became a favorite place of the townspeople. And they began to call it Letskys garden. Only after some time, the name of both the streets and the garden was transformed, probably due to the peculiarities of pronunciation, into Lyadskoy Garden.
