Paraphrase of the painting by Pimen Orlov "October Holiday in Rome" (1851)
Instead of the faces of the characters, I painted four self-portraits (counting the fountain mascaron)
The first time I saw this picture being a child in a bookstore, how passionately I wanted to get on this holiday! I dreamed of becoming all characters and all objects at once.
After many years already in the halls of the State Tretyakov Gallery, I again saw this canvas, in the original. And I still like it terribly!
Having inserted my own physiognomy instead of the faces of the heroes of the picture, I tried to realize a childhood dream.
