Armour

One of the possible interpretations is that here we have a metonymy in which clothing (armour in this case) substitutes for the man himself, growing into his body and presenting to us with absurd solemnity something like an ancient Egyptian or a medieval statue. The form becomes the content, the details substitute for the essence.
