Sunbathing Beauties

This painting was created in Bali in 2009. In Ubud, there were several places where portrait sessions and long model poses were regularly organized, and I often took part in them. The models were sometimes Balinese, sometimes foreigners. Over that period, I produced many portraits and studies, and this work is one of them.
During this session, one model posed for me. At first, I painted her sitting. Later, when she changed her pose and lay down, I decided to combine both images on the same canvas. To avoid making them look like twins, I changed the hairstyle of the second figure. The result became a dialogue between two feminine states.
Later, I added bright accents: a red beach towel, the turquoise sea, and a coconut with two straws. These details strengthened the atmosphere of leisure, enhanced the sensuality of the scene, and emphasized the beauty of the red-haired woman and the blonde.
