Neiman had been involved with jazz for 50 years: scenes from American music in the 1950s and 1960s, especially featuring jazz legends, helped establish him in the art world. So, when he sat down to paint half a century later, his thoughts began to wander. What would his dream band look like?

Instead, he decided to gather all those musicians on his canvas: Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, John Coltrane, and 15 others who revolutionized Americas first truly original musical genre. In fact, when all was said and done, the only member of the Lincoln Center Ensemble to make the cut was
