The painting depicts the spring folk holiday Lely - the Slavs had their own goddess of youth and love - the Goddess Lelya, the daughter of Lada the Virgin - the goddess of motherhood and the patroness of all Slavs. It was believed that before marriage, all young Slavic girls were under the auspices of the eternally young Lelya. There was even a special holiday dedicated to Lele - Lelnik. On this day, which falls on April 22 according to the modern calendar, all Slavic girls performed rituals dedicated to Lelya and asked her for understanding with her beloved young man and a happy marriage.
