Its common knowledge that a crinoline is a framework of hoops worn under a skirt to make it spread out in the shape of a bell. In one of the interviews the sculptor has given the following explanation for the idea of the series: Once Ive run across a cartoon of how women dressed during the rule of Napoleon III: several men are sitting under a very wide crinoline as if it were a house. They live there, hidden from the rest of the world. Taking the analogy a stage further we may say that man has many shields which help him screen himself from reality, creating barriers in order to protect his soul from any intrusion. These shields are skin, clothes, houses. By the way hoop skirts themselves, massive and voluminous, are very much like architectural forms. Or cages into which what used to protect us gradually turns…
