Biography

Alexander Subbotin was born on March 3, 1956, in Vladivostok—a city where sea, sky, and endless horizons merge into a natural canvas of inspiration. It was here that his deep love for color, light, and painting first began to emerge.

He graduated from the Primorsky Regional Art College, earning qualifications as a painter and art teacher—a foundation that would shape both his creative and educational paths.

His art is a dialogue with the sea, the forest, and the shifting light. In his paintings, one can feel the soul of Primorsky nature, captured with lyrical sensitivity and careful attention to detail. Though known primarily as a marine artist (marinist), his works go far beyond seascapes, encompassing portraits, landscapes, and studies from life—all infused with a sense of stillness and wonder.

He works confidently across several mediums, including pastel, oil, and acrylic, each chosen to best express the mood and message of the piece. His visual language is distinctive: soft color transitions, nuanced light, and an atmosphere that evokes poetic reflection.

The unique style of his work has been aptly described by an art critic as "fairy-tale realism"—a blend of truthful depiction and dreamlike elements, where light, memory, and imagination merge on the canvas.

The artist has participated in 11 exhibitions, both solo and group, including venues in:

Vladivostok (notably at the Primorsky State Art Gallery),

Khabarovsk,

Birobidzhan,

Artyom,

Nakhodka,

and internationally in China.

His work is highly regarded by audiences for its sincerity, emotional depth, and exceptional technique. Each painting tells a story, offering viewers a sense of quiet beauty and connection.

Today, Alexander continues to create, drawing inspiration from the natural world of the Russian Far East and the inner landscapes of the human spirit. His studio remains a space where stories are born—told not with words, but through the language of paint, light, and emotion.
