Cape Fiolent

Cape Fiolent is located 15 kilometers from the center of Sevastopol towards Yalta. Here originates the Main (Southern) ridge of the Crimean Mountains, which ends with Cape Ilya near Feodosia.

Fiolent is composed of rocks of volcanic origin, remnants of the action of an ancient volcano that operated here in the Middle Jurassic (152-163 million years ago)[2][3]. Among the volcanic rocks are spilites and keratophyres[4]. On both sides of the cape, lava flows and tuff layers are visible in the coastal cliff. The ancient volcano is significantly destroyed by the sea, limestone covers it from above, but there are inclusions of minerals (jasper, carnelian, chalcedony and others), thanks to which the Jasper beach east of the cape got its name. Orestes and Pylades rocks are located on the water area of the cape.

According to legend, it was at Cape Fiolent that the Apostle Andrew the First-Called set foot on the Crimean land, who arrived here to preach the Gospel [5].

The St. George Monastery is located at Cape Fiolent.
