Biography


Dmitry Arkadyevich Nalbandian (September 2 [15], 1906, Tiflis, Russian Empire - July 2, 1993, Moscow, Russia) - Soviet, Armenian painter, portrait master, animator. People's Artist of the USSR (1969). Hero of Socialist Labor (1976). Laureate of the Lenin Prize (1982) and two Stalin Prizes (1946, 1951). Laureate of the Jawaharlal Nehru Prize (1970).

Dmitry Nalbandian was born on September 2 (15), 1906 in Tiflis (now Tbilisi).
In 1924-1929 he studied at the Tbilisi Academy of Arts with E. E. Lansere and E. M. Tatevosyan, after which he worked as an animator at the State Film Industry of Georgia and at the Odessa Film Studio. Cartoonist in the newspapers of Georgia (1929).
In 1931 he moved to Moscow. In 1931-1934, he was an animator at the Mezhrabpomfilm studio (now the M. Gorky film studio). Participated in the release of "ArmTAG Windows" in Yerevan (1941-1944).
He gained fame primarily as a master of the Soviet ceremonial portrait, although he also worked in the genres of landscape and still life. He created portraits of many representatives of the Soviet party elite (including I.V. Stalin, N.S. Khrushchev, L.I. Brezhnev), for which he was called the "First brush of the Politburo" in artistic circles.
Academician of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1953; corresponding member 1947). Member of the Presidium of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1974-1993) [3]. Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR.
Member of the CPSU (b) since 1948.

He died on July 2, 1993 in Moscow from acute heart failure. He was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery [5].

The artist's works are kept in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary History of Russia, the Russian Museum. One of the artist's self-portraits is in the Uffizi Gallery (Florence).
