On the night of July 30, Kryuchkov, along with three comrades (Astakhov, Ivankov, Shchegolkov), conducted reconnaissance in the border zone in Lithuania and spent the night in a small fishing line. The next morning, the Cossacks discovered a detachment of 27 German cavalrymen. They also noticed the Cossacks and decided to use their numerical advantage to capture them or deal with them. The Cossacks were not at a loss and, riding towards the enemy, cut down with him hand-to-hand.
