Voltigeurs were created as companies designed to serve as skirmishers in battle. It was these companies that became the "light infantry" that has always been at the forefront and in the rifle chain. The appearance of the Voltigeurs is also largely due to the fact that Napoleon wanted to mention brave soldiers who could not, due to their small stature, be enrolled in companies of grenadiers or carabinieri. If the concept of "grenadier" has always been associated with a tall soldier, brave in a bayonet battle, then the "voltigeur" has become synonymous with a small shooter, fearless in the front chain under the fierce fire of the enemy.
