Forest. Fir-tree. Karmanovo
Author: Kozhin Simon

cardboard/oil 33.5cm x 20cm 2000
The artwork is framed
While living in the village of Karmanovo in the Tver region during the summer of 2000, the artist would go sketching several times a day. This sketch was painted in a forest teeming with mosquitoes. To prevent the insects from biting the artist, he lit a fire and placed some damp leaves in it, allowing the smoke to disperse the mosquitoes while he painted en plein air. The artist was often accompanied by neighboring dogs, but they rarely stayed in the forest until the end of the sketch, unable to withstand the bites of the parasites.
This captivating artwork, titled "Corner in the Forest," vividly encapsulates the serene beauty of a dense woodland scene. The central focus is an ancient, towering tree with a robust trunk, its bark rendered in rich, detailed texture. The artist masterfully captures the interplay of light and shadow through the leafy canopy, using a palette of deep greens and soft browns. The foliage is intricately painted, with meticulous attention to detail that brings the scene to life, evoking the forests tranquil atmosphere. The underbrush, painted with layers of lush green and earthy tones, provides depth and balance. A gold, ornately carved frame adds a touch of elegance, emphasizing the painting’s classic appeal. The composition invites viewers to immerse themselves in the serene environment, making it a timeless piece that celebrates natures splendor.
