The ancient Mayans had a curious legend (in all probability, of an older, Toltec origin) that a person became a man thanks to corn. Legend has it that a long time ago corn, called "divine grass", was hidden in the cave of Sinkalya, the "corn dwelling", and thanks to it, the womb of the woman bore fruit and the unborn and growing in the womb babies fed. At that time, only the special arrangement of the gods allowed people to sometimes find thickets of wild corn, and often they were forced to starve. To the question of where the Sinkalya cave is located, only such an answer was permissible: "This is known to one gods."
In reality, the gods themselves did not know where their "divine grass" was, and they sent in search of one of their own, who found out that on certain nights the red ant crawls into the "dwelling of corn" and crawls out from there. But where this dwelling was located, he found out only fifty-two years later, when he saw a red ant creeping out with a large corn grain on its back from a crack in a stone mountain. Then the god turned into an ant and made his way through the crack into the cave of Sinkalya, which was full of golden grains. God took as many of these grains as possible and gave them to people.
