The scene takes place in Kiev. The little boy climbed the remains of a demolished monument of Tsar Nicolas I, which stood in the square in front of Kiev University (presently, a monument to Taras Shevchenko, a poet, occupies this place). The work was created to celebrate the 60-th anniversary of the Soviet Power. It may be based on real-time events, for the Kiev-born artist, who was 8 years old in 1917, could have observed a scene or perhaps himself sat on the discarded body of the Tsar.
