The city is the river. The past, present and future are sweeping past you at the same time.

Old cities are not at all like new cities, which are only a hundred or two hundred years old. In a large and ancient city, people were born, loved, hated, suffered and rejoiced, and then so many people died that this entire ocean of nervous and spiritual energy could not take and disappear without a trace.
