Vinland or "Winland" was the name given to part of North America by the Icelandic Norseman Leif Eirksson, about year 986.
In 1960, archaeological evidence of a Norse settlement in North America (outside Greenland)
was found at LAnse aux Meadows on the northern tip of the island of Newfoundland.
The main sources of information about the Norse voyages to Vinland are two Icelandic sagas,
the Saga of Eric the Red and the Saga of the Greenlanders.
