The fortress is located on the Castle hill (the height is 157 m), which is also called Dzhenevez-Kaya (êðûìñêîòàò. Cenevez Qaya - «Genoa rock»). In its origin the mountain is an ancient petrified coral reef and is a gently sloping from North and steep from the South cone-shaped array, which juts out in Ñóäàêñêóþ Bay of the Black sea Cape Kyz-kulla-Burun (êðûìñêîòàò. Qz Qulle Burun - «Cape maidens tower»). The area of the fortress almost 30 hectares. According to legend, recorded in the late spring «Ñóäàêñêîì synaxarium», the fortress was built in 212 year Alans, however, no archaeological evidence of that date to date have been found. In this regard, many scholars date of its erection the end of the VII century and link it to the Khazars and the Byzantines. The fortress, in addition to the Khazars, Byzantine and Genoese, also owned slaves (XI-XIII CC.), Golden Horde (XIII-XIV centuries). and the Turks (the XV-XVIII centuries).
