Biography

Feudor Mikhailovich Stukoshin (1914 – 1974) lived his short but creative eventful and bright life in Kyrgyzstan (till 1990 – Kirgisie, one of the 15 republic of USSR). F.M. Stukoshin is artist, dowered with big talent for painting, outstanding teacher and educator of the real pleiad of gifted painters. F.M. Stukoshin was a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR since 1949.
Born in peasant’s family, he grew up in Siberia. Since the very childhood in spite of parents’ will he had been striving for becoming a painter. He received an education in Omsk city M.A. Vrubel art and teacher training college which has own brief and interesting history (existed from 1930 to 1941). Within the walls of Omsk city art and teacher training college he learned traditions of realism going back to aesthetic program of the most democratic branch of exhibition association “Union of Russian artists” established in 1903. It was found on the initiative of Moscow painters who were former participants of exhibitions “World of art”, but were striving for expansion of substantial and stylistic searches of “World of art” members. Participants of first exhibitions of the “Union” were M.A. Vrubel, V.E. Borisov-Musatov, V.A. Serov. Many of initiators of the “Union” were at the same time itinerants fighting for embodiment of range of actual social problems in art. Creativity orientation of the “Union” was determined by graduates of Moscow School of painting, sculpture and architecture. There the Russian variant of painting impressionism had been developing in which freshness and sincerity of nature perception was combined with poeticizing of Russian nature. Creative activity of Polenov, Kasatkin, Arkhipov, Grabar, Korovin, Turjanskiy, Krymov and the whole family of masters connected with Moscow School and the “Union of Russian artists” determined to a large extent the artistic orientation and aesthetic ideas of the program of school where unschooled talent of F.M. Stukoshin got its professional training.
Initially he possessed an optimistic world-view which became the outstanding characteristic of his creativity. He painted in specific ingenuous, enthusiastic and at the same time modest manner. The strongest side of Stukoshin’s artistic individuality is considered to be right his striking sincerity, touchable, almost childish admiration for all things in nature, art and human being. And this his quality evidently lives in all his canvases and numerous painted with passion sketches. That is why his painting is thick, colorful, full of both terrain astringency, and unique poetic perception of the world.
But there is another important thing in Stukoshin’s individuality. His works bear bright stamp of the time and ideology of that social system into which he was inscribed and within which he had been searching for positive sense. This is the origin of wide range of democratic subjects of his works, panorama of day-to-day activity, and the interest to close to the artist theme of the Great Patriotic War (the artist went through the whole war).
Feudor Mikhailovich painted the whole range of genre pictures dedicated to different sides of the republic’s life in 1940-1960-s, as well as portraits of first representatives of young working class – miners and metallurgists. These canvases possessing large artistic convincingness and pictorial advantages accurately express social atmosphere of 1950-s and increasing creative impulse of constructive labor and technical progress.
Rural theme excited the painter as well. His painting “On the Trashing Floor” 1949 (Kyrgyz State Museum of Fine Art) is widely known, in which sincere, very characteristic artistic image of postwar working Kyrgyzstan, when free peaceful labour of collective farmers was considered to be a holiday. And if Stukoshin did not created anything else except this sunny canvas so accurately reflected the spiritual atmosphere of that epoque, even so he would remain in history of national art. Other paintings of the artist – “The Narrator” 1948, “The Carpet-makers” 1959, “The Railwaymen” 1951, “The Sugar Beet Growers” 1960, “The Oath of Panfilov Team” 1963, “The Town Is Being Built” 1967, “The Veterans” 1969 (all these works are in Kyrgyz State Museum of Fine Art) – testify the wide range of creative interests of the artist.
His painting talent had been developing year by year, while his health strongly undermined by the war passed away. He did not live even 60 years. And the weaker he became the more violent was his brush. His last works are mainly landscapes and still lives which he painted so vigorously, so rich and young. Undoubtedly this was big creative growth of mature master who had something to say in his painting and rushed to do this. Last fifteen years of Stukoshin’s life were especially fruitful. Painter’s brush had been never sleepy and slack. But during last years of his life it acquired specific violent activity which we can so evidently see in his landscapes of 1960-1970-s. Amazingly, how the artist succeeded in rendering his delicate feelings of earthly life by such a rich, for the first sight, somewhat rude language and seemingly simple traditional methods. The best landscapes of the artist allow feeling unique attractiveness of Kyrgyz steppes, foothills and majestic mountain massifs. Especially beautiful are autumn landscapes – these are the whole symphony of color, and winter landscapes are the best in Kyrgyz painting.
And what splendid are still lives painted in rich and free manner. It is worth looking more carefully and we will sense the originality of pictorial fascination of Stukoshin’s canvases, some special stringy moisture of thick, lightly laid color, freedom and energy of brush touch, pressure of unique color passion.
The creativity of F.M. Stukoshin completed not at graceful extinction as it often happens in the twilight of creative fortunes, but on a high note and left a deep and unique trace.
F.M. Stukoshin left a huge heritage in all painting genres, part of which is in Kyrgyz National Museum of Fine Arts, in galleries and private collection in Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Israel, Japan, Germany, England and America.
