The original canvas was created by Raphael for the altar of the church of the monastery of St. Sixtus II in Piacenza by order of Pope Julius II.
The painting depicts the Madonna and Child surrounded by Pope Sixtus II and St. Barbara on the sides and with two angels looking up at the descent of God. The figures form a triangle. The curtain opened on the sides once again emphasizes the geometric thoughtfulness of the composition. This is one of the first works in which the viewer is inscribed in the composition: it seems that the Madonna descends from heaven directly towards the viewer and looks into his eyes.
