canvas/tempera 150cm x 108cm 2011
On the image, Rev. Sergius of Radonezh holds a patronizing Orthodox church. Russian people, and in particular Roerich himself, considered the saint to be the defender of his native land, which, according to legend, he repeatedly defended. Over time, Roerich himself stated that St. Sergius protected the painting that was transferred to the Russian Museum in Prague. The museum suffered significant damage due to an attack by the Nazi troops, but Roerichs painting itself miraculously survived.
