The artist painted this sketch in 2004 and then a small color sketch to order. He did not execute the painting according to sketches. At the request of the customer, Mikhail Stepanovich Tkachenkos painting "The Battle of the Brig Mercury with Turkish ships on May 14 (26), 1829" was used as a source, without greatly reworking it. Having taken an unequal battle, the crew of the brig Mercury, under the command of A.I. Kazarsky, won a brilliant victory, inflicting damage to two Turkish battleships, forcing him to withdraw from the battle.
This work is a monochrome sketch of a historical composition depicting a naval battle, capturing a dynamic and stormy scene of a fierce battle between three majestic ships on the high seas. The artist masterfully uses complex lines to depict fluttering sails, clouds of smoke and crashing waves, conveying the chaos and intensity of naval warfare. The composition highlights the grandeur of the ships, artfully depicted with detailed study of the rigging and tall masts that dominate the horizon. Contrasting tones enhance the dramatic effect, creating a vivid illusion of movement and depth. Presented in an elegant wooden frame with a delicate grey passepartout, the work is further highlighted by a distinctive brass plaque detailing its historical context. This work of art stands out for its historical significance, artistic precision, and fascinating depiction of naval history, making it a valuable addition to any collection.
