The painting was inspired by Alexander Bloks poem "Night, Street, Lamppost, Drugstore..." (excerpt from the "Dances of Death" cycle)

"Night, street, lamppost, drugstore,
Meaningless and dim light.
Live another quarter of a century—
Everything will be like this. There is no escape.
Die—youll start over again.
And everything will repeat itself, as before:
Night, the icy ripples of the canal,
Drugstore, street, lamppost..."
