Specialists of the Christies auction house, describing this painting for the auction dated 07/31/2001, indicated that the painting depicts the Cocos-Keeling Isles, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean, which were discovered by the British navigator William Keeling in 1609. However, one cannot agree with Christies position. In many ways, the landscape depicted in the picture clearly refers to the island of Cocos (Spanish: Isla del Coco), which is located in the Pacific Ocean and is the territory of Costa Rica. It is this Pacific island that has two bays - Wafer Bay (mentioned in the title of the picture) and Chathara Bay. It is about this island that there are legends about a pirate treasure (more than 300 expeditions unsuccessfully tried to find it there). And if you look at this island with the help of Google, you can easily recognize the outlines of the hills and the waterfall depicted in the picture.
