Torzhok was founded by Novgorod merchants at the turn of the 9th-10th centuries at the confluence of the Zdorovets brook into the Tvertsa.
The first mention of the city in chronicle sources dates back to 1139. Torzhok arose and developed as a trading settlement, changing several names in history: Torg, Novy Torg and Torzhets. The city in the past was located at the intersection of land and waterways, which contributed to its economic development. By the 13th century, it was surrounded by a stone wall, protected by an earthen rampart and ditches, and turned into a fortress.
The city is in third place (after Novgorod and Staraya Russa) in terms of the number of birch bark letters found.
