Layered painting.
This painting technique is divided into a number of successive stages: undermining, registration, glaze.
The technique of multi-layer painting is based on the layering of several colorful layers and differs from the a la prima writing technique (in one sitting), primarily because each layer of paint is finally dried before applying the next layer, and it is carried out from beginning to end with oil paints.
Such masters of the past as Rubens, Jan van Eyck, Rembrandt, Jordaens and others worked in this technique.
