a widely revered Scandinavian deity, the supreme god in Scandinavian-Germanic mythology, the father and leader of the Aesir people, the inhabitants of Asgard. In the "Younger Edda" Odins father is named Bor ("born"), who was the son of the mighty first man Buri, and his mother was Bestla, the daughter of the giant Bolthorn. In mythological poetry, on reliefs and drawings, Odin appears as the god of war, bringing victory in battle, the god of skaldic poetry, wisdom and shamanic rituals. He possesses secret knowledge, powerful spells and poetic art. Odin is considered the patron saint of professional warriors and the military aristocracy. He is the master of Valhalla ("the hall of the slain") and the ruler of the Valkyries. Odin meets in his hall with a golden roof of shields and walls of spears warriors who fell in battle with weapons in their hands. According to eschatological myths, when the day of the final battle, Ragnarok, comes, Odin will be killed by the monstrous wolf Fenrir.
