Biography

Sergey Stepanov: Architect of Light and Living Matter
"I no longer build structures; I construct poetry through pigments, guided by the palette knife and the integrity of the moment."
I moved to Saint Petersburg at the age of 23. It was here that I earned my degree in economics and established a career in the construction industry as a structural engineer. However, at 33, my life reached a definitive turning point.
Confronting a life-threatening illness—pancreatic cancer—and undergoing a complex recovery, I realized that time is far too precious to spend on anything that does not set the heart on fire. I walked away from the world of construction to transform a lifelong passion into my true calling. Stepping out from the realm of precise calculations into a world of evocative hues, I traded blueprints for canvases. Today, I do not build edifices; I build poetry in color.
My Method: Life "Here and Now"
I do not paint from memory in the silence of a closed studio. My creative process is an unmediated dialogue with the present moment. I take my canvas into the world, capturing the pulse of life as it happens. For me, it is not merely about the landscape; it is about how light transfigures the world in a single heartbeat. It is a hunt for the ephemeral—a process where the canvas becomes a living witness to my presence.
In my work, I strive to convey a specific visceral energy and a depth of perception. My palette is an infinite symphony of light. I do not merely see color; I "hear" its music, transforming landscapes into visual poems where every shade possesses its own voice.
Technique and Philosophy
Working in the style of Modern Impressionism, I favor the palette knife and spatula over traditional brushes.
One stroke—one decision. This technique allows me to translate the very texture of life: the ruggedness of granite, the softness of moss, the density of mist. By layering emotions onto the canvas, I create a space where light pierces through matter. This choice is intentional; I value the honesty and courage of every movement. The palette knife allows me to apply pigment with a physical presence, creating a volume and energy that the viewer can truly feel.
Geography of Inspiration
My work is fueled by two distinct elements:
• The Majesty of Saint Petersburg: I seek to capture its unique atmospheric energy, turning urban architecture into a living emotion.
• The Primordial Beauty of Karelia: My canvases breathe the rugged spirit of the North—from monumental cliffs to the profound silence of forest lakes.
A Global Dialogue
My paintings have become my way of communicating with the world. I am honored that they resonate in galleries and private collections across Russia and beyond. It is the ultimate proof that the language of light and sincere emotion requires no translation. It is understood by anyone who has ever paused, breathless, before the beauty of a fading day.
