Born on August 24, 1929 in the Krasnodar Territory.
In 1957 he graduated from the Kharkov State Art Institute and returned to Krasnodar, where he became a teacher at an art school. Subsequently, he worked at the art and graphic faculty of the Krasnodar Pedagogical Institute.
He was actively engaged in creativity, most fully demonstrating his talent in the genre of landscape. A.A. Kalugin became one of the outstanding masters of the Kuban landscape. In 1967 he was admitted to the Union of Artists of the USSR. For several years he headed the Krasnodar branch of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR.
Died February 12, 1984. He was buried at the Slavic cemetery in the city of Krasnodar.
