According to the sculptor’s widow, Leonid Berlin admired the heroism of the members of the Young Guard underground organization who fought against fascist invaders in the Ukrainian town of Krasnodon in 1942-43. The image of Ulyana Gromova, one of the most active members of this organization, is treated by the artist as a personification of Youth, Courage and Beauty.
