A detailed title gives the key to its riddle - a nontrivial solution of the image of Don Quixote. This image contains a well-known contradiction: on the one hand, it is - a noble knight with all the attributes, including writing poems in honor of the beloved, but, on the other hand, sick, feeble, crazy old man. The artist has solved this contradiction, transmitting a part of knight values to the Don’s horse - Rocinante.
The technique is typical for A. Semushin’s trans-surreal method. The picturesque plane has almost no depth; there were applied conditional means of spatial construction and reproduction of figures, which solves the problem of location of the objects in space, without violating of the two-dimensional pictorial plane. The figures are almost deprived of the dimension, their position in space is shown mainly by the relation of tones. The colors are subjective emphasized. The background, as in most works, is very abstract, it’s hardly to guess "a seascape at sunset". Note that in the primary source of literary the main characters are spelled out in detail, but they interact so that some indivisible their image arises. A. Semushin in the picture managed to include this feature of Spanish classics works - the
layout of characters in the picture creates not just a holistic but a ‘monolithic’ pictorial image. The picture is curious that after reading the title, the viewer, as a rule, has no
difficulty to recognize the characters of Cervantes. But, then, just some persons can read its contents without a prompt. Also note that, as in the case of "Torero", a Spanish theme in
A. Simushin’s works inspired by the works of Dali, which was also very interested in the image of the Knight of the Sorrowful Face.
