In this work, A. Semushin organically combined two genres – portrait and landscape,
and two styles: post-impressionism, in which Van Gogh worked himself, and later -
expressionism, but a measure of abstractness is more than in the classical expressionism. The dynamic strokes are used characteristic of the creative manner of Van Gogh. However, A. Semushin’s dab is more impulsive than the great Dutchman’s - not running down "drizzling” rain, it is heterodirectional and more chaotic. The texture of the canvas
is not as flat and smooth as in trans- surreal works, but more relief. If to say about the portrait painting – it is expressionistic rephrasing of Van Gogh self-portraits with
a bandaged ear. The great Dutchman is depicted immersed in himself - focused on the experience of his internal conflict. This relatively high level of abstraction does not take away an individual sense, does not hinder but helps the artist to keep an emotional
authenticity, to penetrate into the soul of the character, read his character, his emotions. Gold Yellow sunny colors of the landscape are also borrowed from the Van Gogh works - his Parisian period (1886-1888 years). It makes the picture extremely temperamental
and expressive - allows to express the main internal conflict of the great Dutch: on the one hand, his sense of harmony and beauty, on the other hand, the irresistible painful inner anxiety generated by the imperfection of the world and human nature.
